If I had to decide this very second whether I'm going to not-United versus not-United this Sunday I'd say I'm going. Meh.
Aarghlessness sucks. That I use my United aargh as concentrated proxy for all aargh means my aarghlessness sucks at full, undiluted lack of strength. All my teams suck right now.
There's an expansion draft upcoming, and United will protect players and leave others exposed. Kinney at DCenters and Goff at his blog and UnitedMania (blogrolled) and Lifton at Booked for Dissent (blogrolled) make cases for who should be off-limits and who should be bait.
So, summoning what aargh I've got:
I want Gomez back. No one was affected by the defensive ineptitude more than Gomez. He was brought in to be a 10 atop a 5 midfield. His play didn't fall off, the play of his teammates fell off, and he played - valiantly - out of position for what he does best, and he got better at it as the season progressed. But he had to come further back to get the ball than he used to, and with one less offensive option to play to, opposing defenses had far easier options to double-mark him. He was butchered.
Gomez, Moreno (though not as captain), Emilio, Olsen (captain), Simms, Perkins, Burch (though I'm not sold), McTavish (though I'm not sold), Fred, Vanney (aargh!), Kpene (still).
Bobby? Buh-bye. Pluses? If drafted, he won't be in middle defense for United next season. Pluses? With luck, he'll be in middle defense for San Jose next year both games United plays them. Though low salary or no, why would San Jose want him?
Meh. This is going to be the longest off-season ever, six eternities plus one forever until the first game. Plus this Sunday in my stadium watching not-United play not-United. Aargh(less)(ful).
