United has finalized the signing of Robert Ssejjemba according to today's Post. No details on the length of the contract, though I'd suspect there are options including Ssejjemba's invite to training next preseason.
Here's his soccer biography from dcunited.com:
Ssejjemba, a native of Kampala, Uganda, has earned six caps - and scored two goals - with the full Ugandan National Team, including two World Cup qualifiers in June of 2005. He was a part of under-18 and under-20 and under-23 Ugandan National Teams before coming to the United States to attend Virginia Intermont College (NAIA) on a soccer scholarship. A 2004 graduate of Virginia Intermont, Ssejjemba was a two-year captain and a two-time All-American, totaling 75 goals and 36 assists over four seasons. He played for the Kalamazoo Kingdom (PDL) in 2004 and led the team in goals (10), assists (6), and points (26). In his rookie season with the Kickers in 2005, Ssejjemba scored three goals in 22 games. This season he led the team with 17 goals in 19 games, helping Richmond capture the United Soccer League's second division championship while earning recognition as the league's Most Valuable Player.
Whether or not this signing makes any difference I kind of doubt (and hope I'm wrong). Striker IS the weak position right now. Moreno is Moreno but hurt and tired, Walker is mallet-footed and Eskandarian is hurt and has two left feet. Maybe the novelty of Ssejjemba's presense can befuddle other team's defensive strategies for a couple of games, but to be sensible, if he was an impact player of great import he wouldn't be playing - at age 26 - for the Richmond Kickers. Still, he can't be worse than what DCU currently has.
